‘Miss Conception’ Acquired by First Look

First Look Studios is pleased to announce the acquisition of “Miss Conception,” formerly titled “Buy Borrow and Steal,” starring Heather Graham, Mia Kirshner and Tom Ellis. The film is directed by Eric Styles, written by Camilla Leslie and produced by Doris Kirch. Blue Angel Films limited co-produced with Miromar Entertainment AG, in association with BBS Productions Ltd and the support of Northern Ireland Screen.

Recently acquired by First Look Studios at the Berlin film Festival, The deal was brokered by First Look’s EVP of Acquisitions, Gary Hirsch, and Oliver Mahrdt of Hanns Wolters International.

“Miss Conception” tells the story of Georgina (Heather Graham), a broody 33-year-old woman who sends her partner packing when it becomes obvious that he does not share her desire for children. Zak (Tom Ellis) hopes she’ll cool off while he is away on a planned business trip. But Georgina, discovering early menopause runs in her family, hears her biological clock ticking like an atom bomb and must answer the call. She turns to her reluctant best friend Clem (Mia Kirshner) to recruit the perfect but unsuspecting man to fulfill her dreams for a child.

“I’m delighted to have First Look Studios releasing the film theatrically in the US,” says Oliver Mahrdt. “The producer Doris Kirch and co-producer Michel Morales are looking forward to the world premiere at the 25th anniversary of the Miami Film Festival tonight.”

“I am confident that women will relate to Heather’s character in this light-hearted look at a dilemma that millions of women face. At the same time, men will enjoy watching Heather and Mia Kirshner so it is a perfect date movie,” says Gary Hirsch.

“Miss Conception” is slated for a June 2008 release.

‘Buy Borrow Steal’ retitled

According to various online sources, the title of Heather’s upcoming film has been changed from ‘Buy Borrow Steal’ to ‘Miss Conception.’ I truly hate to say what I’m about to say, but this is one of the worst titles I’ve heard of in a long while. If I weren’t a fan of Heather and Mia Kirshner and didn’t know anything about the film, the title alone would make me walk past it in a video store. I’m sure there were good reasons behind the change of title, as there usually are, but I just don’t think this particular title was the best choice in the end.

‘Adrift in Manhattan’ Screencaps

Screencaps of Heather’s performance in ‘Adrift in Manhattan,’ including 3 deleted scenes, are now available in the gallery for your viewing pleasure.

If you haven’t had a chance to see the film yet you should watch it when you have a chance, as it is a very well made and well acted indie film, but only if you are the appropriate age to watch R-rated films containing graphic sex scenes and scenes of implied incest. The sex scenes aren’t really any more graphic than things Heather has done in the past, but there is one scene that has “shocked” many audiences and made many viewers very uncomfortable. The implied incest revolves around Victor Rasuk’s character and while nothing is shown outright, many of his scenes are incredibly uncomfortable and painful to watch. The reasons for these warnings are that (a) we have minors who visit the site and they, as well as their parents, should be aware of the content of the film; and (b) some scenes in the film will make many people uncomfortable. I would have given these warnings sooner, but I was only just recently able to watch them film in its entirety and therefore couldn’t comment on it until now.

indieWIRE Production Report: ‘Baby on Board’

Coming on the scene with his ode to Drew Barrymore (“My Date With Drew”) in 2004, Brian Herzlinger’s sophomore effort is a romantic comedy starring Heather Graham as a career-driven woman who must rethink her priorities after learning she’s pregnant.

While trying to get his own scripts off the ground after “My Date With Drew,” Herzlinger’s manager passed him Russell Scalise and Michael Wright’s script. He was instantly drawn to the material and envisioned a “Working Girl” meets “Baby Boom” story of a woman sacrificing to make it in the male-dominated corporate world only to find herself blindsided by a greater responsibility. “Being able to pull comedy out of one of the most amazing miracles of life hasn’t been done to this extent that we’re doing it,” says Herzlinger from the set. The film also stars Jerry O’Connell as Graham’s wife, John Corbett as O’Connell’s best friend and Lara Flynn Boyle as Graham’s work-obsessed boss.

Currently shooting in Chicago for 20 days, the Windy City’s popular landmarks will be front and center as Herzlinger is set to shoot at the John Hancock Center, Tru restaurant, Nick’s Fishmarket, Michigan Avenue along with some scenes shot in Evanston. But going from an $1100 documentary to a romantic comedy with an impressive ensemble brings a little more pressure, especially scenes with multiple characters and just one camera. “Ten principle characters in the scene at once, you have to deal with them coming in and out, blocking, schedule and each of these actors have different methods and you need to adapt your directing and communication skills with them to give them what they need,” Herzlinger explains. “But I’m really thrilled with the results so far.”

Shot on 35mm by Denis Maloney, the editor is Ross Albert. Emilio Ferrari is producing and Scalise is executive producing.
