Heather Graham Gets Hands-On in Cambodia
Heather Graham has visited Phnom Penh twice with Cambodian Children’s Fund founder Scott Neeson. Since its inception in 2005, CCF has opened five centers in Phnom Penh that offer education, healthcare, nutrition and shelter.
“From the moment Scott started CCF, I supported him by sending money. But I didn’t know exactly what he was doing until I visited the centers two and a half years ago. I went to Thailand just for fun and then I went over to Cambodia to see what he was doing. It was the most amazing part of my trip. As soon as you get there and you see the conditions, you want to help these kids. A lot of them start working from the age of two or three.”
The kids are most certainly not all right in Cambodia. The city of Phnom Penh alone has almost 15,000 children scavenging or begging for more than six hours a day. “Some of the kids have AIDS or hepatitis or have been trafficked before they’re six years old,” says Graham, who decided that she wanted to help “do something” about the situation when she first visited the region in 2009 with CCF founder Scott Neeson. (She had met Neeson on a yoga retreat a decade ago.) Since her first trip, she has joined the CCF board and hosted fundraisers on both coasts. Recently, she returned to Phnom Penh with Neeson and spent a week volunteering with the kids. In her mind, he’s the celeb. “Scott is pretty famous in Cambodia. I’m so inspired to see what one amazing and smart person can do.”

Heather Graham Talks To GlobalGrind About Education In Cambodia
Unless a horrific tragedy happens, as consumers and producers of media, we sometimes forget that the world beyond America’s borders is inhabited by human beings who have less than us. We also forget that there are people with enterprising spirits and hearts who are interested in alleviating the suffering of the less fortunate. Hollywood actress Heather Graham is one such person.
Graham, who performed memorably in films like “The Hangover” and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,” has been an active member of the The Cambodian Children’s Fund. The not for profit organization aims to provide education for children suffering horrific poverty in the East Asian country, whose infrastructure and economy was annihilated during both the Cambodian Civil and Vietnam War.
GlobalGrind caught up with Graham hours before a fundraiser for The Cambodian Children’s Fund on Monday night in New York. Here’s some of what she said.
GlobalGrind: So why are we here tonight?
Heather Graham: The Cambodian Children’s Fund is the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen and they are educating these kids that live in garbage dumps. They are giving them an amazing [opportunity for education] – it’s incredible.
