ABC Defends Cancellation of Graham Comedy
One minute, Heather Graham was the face of ABC. The next minute, she was gone. Her comedy series “Emily’s Reasons Why Not” was promoted relentlessly by the network as the linchpin of its post-football Monday night schedule, but was only given one airing before being yanked earlier this month.
ABC committed to the big promotional campaign before even seeing a script for the show, said ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson on Saturday. The series turned out to be a dog creatively, he indicated.
“Once we saw it was not launching, we felt like unfortunately it was not going to get better and we had to make a change,” McPherson said.
A total of six episodes were filmed, and McPherson said no determination has been made about whether they would be burned off.
The quick hook doesn’t mean producers of other ABC series with middling ratings — “Invasion,” for example — should be shaking in fear.
“That’s a great example for us of when to be patient and when to fold them,” he said. “We believe in that show.”

ABC halts production of Graham comedy
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 17 (UPI) — After only six episodes, ABC has halted production on Heather Graham’s midseason comedy “Emily’s Reasons Why Not.”
The show opened to disappointing ratings Jan. 9 and even lost a huge chunk of viewers from its “Wife Swap” lead-in, Daily Variety reported.
The production shutdown leaves only five more episodes to air, but the network could decide to just trash those and replace the replacement show, Variety said.
“It is a shame,” executive producer Gavin Poline told Variety. “A lot of people were working really hard and the show kept improving.”
However, he added: “I can’t fault ABC, though: they promoted it like crazy and when the audience stays away, in this super-competitive environment, quick decisions are made. That’s the television business.”

Heather Graham wants to add a woman’s viewpoint
Even a year ago, Heather Graham never really looked at weekly television as an option.
However, “I got really inspired by some of the really good television on right now,” says the 35-year-old actress, whose film credits include “Boogie Nights” and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”
“Emily’s Reasons Why Not” (9 p.m. EST Mondays, ABC) has Graham playing a single career woman trying to navigate office politics and her harried love life. It’s based on the book of the same name.
“I always loved ‘Sex and the City,’ ‘Scrubs’ and ‘Arrested Development.’ I think there are TV shows out there that are better than a lot of movies,” she says. “I go to a lot of movies now that have nothing going for them. I see a lot happening in television right now. It’s a good time to get into it.”

Heather Graham’s Hot Beau!
Heather Graham is looking for love on ABC’s brand new comedy “Emily’s Reasons Why Not,” airing Mondays at 9 p.m.
In the mid-season comedy, Emily Sanders (Graham) is a successful career woman who has great instincts in every aspect of her life but one — relationships! After a series of mistakes, the 30-something is determined to make better life choices, something Graham says everyone can understand.
“I think as you’ve dated a little bit, you definitely try not to make the same mistakes you’ve made,” she says. “So I can relate to that.”
Graham, who’s famous for her big screen roles in movies like ‘Boogie Nights’ and ‘Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me,’ chose to head to the small screen because she believes this show fills a void left open when “Sex and the City” ended its six-year run in 2004.
“I just felt there was nothing out there where women were talking so frankly about their lives,” she says. “I felt that it was really the only thing that I was relating to in that way, and I wasn’t relating to movies like that.”
Graham was also excited to take on a show because of its ever-rare woman’s point of view. “I felt it was a great thing for women to watch and feel like their struggles were recorded,” she says. “It was empowering.”

‘Emily’ Gets James Patrick Stuart
Emily is about to get her man — or at least one of them. The Hollywood Reporter says that James Patrick Stuart has signed on to be part of the upcoming Heather Graham sitcom, “Emily’s Reasons Why Not.”
While New York writer Emily scours sex in the big city, Stuart’s character will be causing some conflict, as a consultant for her publisher.
Stuart is a veteran of TV, guest starring on everything from “Seinfeld” to “Medium.” He was also a regular on Fox’s “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” and had parts in the films “Gods and Generals” and “Pretty Woman.”
