Heather Graham’s focus on fun

She’s been in front of the cameras since she was 14, thanks to a somewhat doe-eyed early screen presence, but now that Heather Graham is over 40, she’s looking to protect and serve the next generation with steely resolve.

It’s not a police state of being, she says. It’s about being in the moment, and simply observing the emotional reality around her — and within her.

An avid practitioner of yoga and meditation, Graham says it’s not always easy maintaining focus in the kaleidoscopic world of entertainment, but whenever she works with kids, she almost feels it’s her duty to inspire through example.

“I remember what it was like to work on my first movie,” says Graham, sitting in a wingback chair in one of Toronto’s grand old dames. “And I think it’s really important to be able to preserve the joy of it all, because it’s all a game of let’s pretend, no matter how old you are.”

Graham has worked with kids in two of her last outings, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, and the truly transcendent The Flying Machine, which features classical piano superstar Lang Lang guiding a winged piano over Europe and is currently unfurling as part of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Stunning At TIFF, No Argument

Heather attended the première of “The Flying Machine” at TIFF, the Toronto International Film Festival, yesterday (Sept 11) and looked amazing in her little white dress.

She also went to the Sony Pictures Classics 20th Anniversary party later the same day.

Heather Graham Gets Hands-On in Cambodia

Heather Graham has visited Phnom Penh twice with Cambodian Children’s Fund founder Scott Neeson. Since its inception in 2005, CCF has opened five centers in Phnom Penh that offer education, healthcare, nutrition and shelter.

“From the moment Scott started CCF, I supported him by sending money. But I didn’t know exactly what he was doing until I visited the centers two and a half years ago. I went to Thailand just for fun and then I went over to Cambodia to see what he was doing. It was the most amazing part of my trip. As soon as you get there and you see the conditions, you want to help these kids. A lot of them start working from the age of two or three.”

The kids are most certainly not all right in Cambodia. The city of Phnom Penh alone has almost 15,000 children scavenging or begging for more than six hours a day. “Some of the kids have AIDS or hepatitis or have been trafficked before they’re six years old,” says Graham, who decided that she wanted to help “do something” about the situation when she first visited the region in 2009 with CCF founder Scott Neeson. (She had met Neeson on a yoga retreat a decade ago.) Since her first trip, she has joined the CCF board and hosted fundraisers on both coasts. Recently, she returned to Phnom Penh with Neeson and spent a week volunteering with the kids. In her mind, he’s the celeb. “Scott is pretty famous in Cambodia. I’m so inspired to see what one amazing and smart person can do.”

Heather Might Have ‘Little In Common’

Nellie Andreeva of Deadline.com reports that Heather has signed on to star in a comedy pilot for Fox.

A previously made pilot of Little In Common, by Rob Thomas, was passed over earlier this year by the networks despite being well received.  The retooled version stars Heather and Rob Corddry as parents with very contrasting neighbours.

We haven’t seen Heather on the small screen since her shortlived series Emily’s Reasons Why Not and her recurring role on Scrubs.  Hopefully the show will be picked for series.
