‘Emily’ Gets James Patrick Stuart

Emily is about to get her man — or at least one of them. The Hollywood Reporter says that James Patrick Stuart has signed on to be part of the upcoming Heather Graham sitcom, “Emily’s Reasons Why Not.”

While New York writer Emily scours sex in the big city, Stuart’s character will be causing some conflict, as a consultant for her publisher.

Stuart is a veteran of TV, guest starring on everything from “Seinfeld” to “Medium.” He was also a regular on Fox’s “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” and had parts in the films “Gods and Generals” and “Pretty Woman.”

Heather Graham’s recipe for love

Heather Graham is a confirmed romantic. “I believe in love. What else is life for if it isn’t for love,” says Graham.

For Graham, romantic love “begins with a love for yourself. You can’t love another person properly if you don’t love yourself.”

Though she is not currently in a relationship, Graham is adamant she has not given up on romance.

New Canadian big-screen film ‘Cake’ confronts modern relationship dilemmas

When it comes to romance and independence, can you have your cake and eat it, too?

That’s the question posed by a new romantic comedy called Cake, which opens in theatres across Canada on Friday. It’s Canadian in that it was written, produced and directed by homegrown talent, although two bankable American stars – Heather Graham and Taye Diggs – have been cast in the leads.

A Considerable Town

On a recent Tuesday night, the rooftop penthouse level of the Checkers Hilton pool was the scene of a wrap party for Broken — a low-profile indie with high-profile stars Heather Graham and Jeremy Sisto backed by Linda Hamilton, Jake Busey and a cast of 20. No Pat O’Brien, red carpets, PR flacks or paparazzi here; this affair was a low-key throwback to when independent films were really independent and so were the wrap parties.

Up on the roof the movie stars hung around the swimming pool on a spectral summer night. That secret Art Deco alcove provided a view of all the natural and man-made wonders of Los Angeles — skyscrapers towering into a perfect, blue, cloud-laced, edible L.A. August sky, jumbo jets swooping gracefully into their approach. By 8 p.m. there were around 100 cast and crew eating, drinking and relaxing.

TV writers take digs at Utah, Mormons

Small-Screen Stereotypes
By Vince Horiuchi
The Salt Lake Tribune

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – New rule: Television needs new jokes about Utah and its people.

TV’s view of Zion seems to be confined to ultraconservative, closed-minded Mormons who refuse to have sex. At least that’s the sense viewers might have after a recent barrage of TV series – ranging from HBO’s political comedy show “Real Time with Bill Maher” to “Desperate Housewives” and “Cold Case” – took well-placed shots at Utah.

For political comic Maher, whose talk show ends with a segment about the state of America called “New Rules,” the Beehive State is a favorite target. For example:

“New rule: The next reality show must be called ‘America’s Stupidest State.’ We’ll start at 50, and each week, if your state does something really stupid with, say, evolution or images of the Virgin Mary, you’ll move on to the next round. Of course, the final five will always end up being Alabama, Utah, Kansas, Texas and Florida. Sorry, Tennessee.”
